Epigallocatechin-3 Gallate Inhibits STAT-1/JAK2/IRF-1/HLA-DR/HLA-B and Reduces CD8 MKG2D Lymphocytes of Alopecia Areata Patients

For several years, the big breakthrough in Alopecia Areata research has been the discovery of using Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors as a treatment. While they are still the next best thing, research has shown that another molecule called Epigallocatechin-3 Gallate (EGCG) has the same immunomodulatory (immune-system modifying) effects on the JAK-STAT pathway, and is safer, more cost effective, and is topically active, meaning the medication is active when applied topically to the skin. These are very exciting findings, though more research is needed on this molecule before it can be developed into a drug that can actually be used by patients. EGCG is the major catechin (antioxidant) found in teas, specifically green tea. However, there currently is no research to suggest that taking an oral EGCG or green tea supplement would be beneficial in treating Alopecia Areata, and those interested should consult their physician before doing so.
