WHAT IS iREST?
The usual group iRest practice involves participants finding a comfortable position (sitting, laying down, standing, moving) where they may still be able to remain aware for anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes. Every possibility is welcomed: falling asleep or even staying completely alert. They’ll be guided through a mindfulness / meditation practice, that can involve scanning / noticing / welcoming the body, breath, feelings & emotions, thoughts, joy, ego-self, & deep Awareness / Pure Presence / Pure Being.
iRest was developed by Dr. Richard Miller, yogic scholar, researcher and clinical psychologist, who combined traditional yogic practice with Western psychology and neuroscience. iRest has been shown to be effective in scientific trials for conditions including chronic pain, sleep problems, depression and anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is practiced and taught by thousands of people worldwide in a wide range of settings, including health centers, schools, community centers, yoga studios, correctional facilities and military hospitals. iRest is simple to learn and easy to practice. It can be practiced by anyone, regardless of physical ability or experience with meditation. Once learned, iRest becomes a set of tools for life.
